Relief of nocturnal enuresis by desmopressin is kidney and vasopressin type 2 receptor independent.
Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is a common problem in childhood and adolescence. Although various treatments are highly effective, a common underlying hypothesis on the pathogenesis is lacking. The success of desmopressin, a synthetic analogue of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin, has been attributed to increased renal water reabsorption that is mediated by activation of the renal vasopres...

Background & Objectives: Nocturnal enuresis, the involuntary passing of urine during sleep after the age at which bladder control would normally be anticipated, is a widespread and potentially disabling disorder of children. Treatment of enuresis includes non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic procedures. Imipramine, anticholinergics, and desmopressin are appropriate drugs for treatment. Desmopres...
متن کاملThe effect of desmopressin on short-term memory in children with primary nocturnal enuresis.
PURPOSE The use of desmopressin in patients with primary nocturnal enuresis is based on the hypothesis of a nocturnal lack of endogenous arginine vasopressin. However, in addition to the kidney, other targets of desmopressin are known. Therefore, we examined whether the administration of desmopressin influences central nervous function in children with primary nocturnal enuresis. MATERIALS AN...
متن کاملLow-dose DDAVP in nocturnal enuresis.
A five-year experience with the vasopressin analogue desmopressin acetate (DDAVP) for nocturnal enuresis is described in 59 children. The initial starting dose of 5 micrograms at bedtime is lower than that reported in other series. Eighty-one percent of patients required 10 micrograms or less to achieve improvement or resolution of bedwetting.
متن کاملEnuresis--background and treatment.
Nocturnal urinary continence is dependent on 3 factors: 1) nocturnal urine production, 2) nocturnal bladder function and 3) sleep and arousal mechanisms. Any child will suffer from nocturnal enuresis if more urine is produced than can be contained in the bladder or if the detrusor is hyperactive, provided that he or she is not awakened by the imminent bladder contraction. Urine production is re...
